Title: Help and support: How to use Proquote: introduction

Here's a useful summary of Proquote to help you understand how the service works: You can click on the headings below to jump to each section.

Stock Selection

The Proquote Service provides real-time share prices and financial news over the Internet to your web browser. It enables you to:

Define personal Stock Lists of Tradable Instruments; it dynamically updates entries as they change.

Have access to a real-time "Top 100" stocks display (SETS stocks), News, Trades and Price "Tickers", and offers simple graphing facilities. "Level 2" data (full details of trades and prices) is available as an option (on a contended or non-contended access basis).

Define Multiple Client Accounts, using "friendly" names (such as "John Smith"). This enables a professional or semi-professional investor to maintain a separate group of Stock Lists and Tickers for each of his clients or associates.

Connecting to the Proquote website

To use the Proquote service you need to be registered with an Internet Service Provider ("ISP"), and have Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5 browser software installed on your computer. We recommend that Proquote is used with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher to enable the maximum number of windows to be displayed.

The Internet Browser will be either provided by your ISP, or will be included with your computer's operating system (e.g. Windows® 2000). Note that if you are accessing Proquote from a corporate site with a firewall or proxy server you may need to ask your IT department to enable access for the Proquote service.

To access the Proquote service, connect to the Internet and type the Proquote URL in your browser's address bar: http://www.proquote.net or press the Proquote icon on your desktop if one has been provided.

The Proquote home page

The first time you connect, Proquote will download and install the Java program that you need to use the service. You will be asked to accept the installation of the software; say "YES" (use the 'Always trust' option to avoid regularly downloading the program). The download will then proceed. This will take a short while (c. 1-2 minutes) and then the program will open its default set of data windows.

Logging on

As Proquote is a subscription service you need to enter your Username and Password.

Example of Login box

The Username will default to the one you used last time you accessed the Proquote system. Enter or modify the Username as necessary, enter the corresponding Password, then click "OK". A "Welcome to Proquote" window will be shown. Click on "yes" to activate the system. The Proquote Main Window and any Master Account "auto open" windows are then displayed (see Appendix A for example desktop).

You may wish to minimise your browser window after logging in (click on the "-" box in the top right hand corner - do not close it or use the "x" ).

Logging off/exit

To log off (exit) Proquote you can use the Exit option on the Proquote toolbar (see below), or close the toolbar window, or close your underlying Internet browser window. If you are on a dial-up connection these operations will break the data connection with Proquote but will not disconnect your telephone line.

If in doubt, close your Internet browser window and (if appropriate) use your PC's Dial Hang-up facility or physically disconnect your modem (e.g. via a button on the modem) to ensure the call is disconnected and you are no longer paying telephone call charges.

Proquote service shortcuts
For ease of use, the Proquote system offers a number of "shortcuts" to functions.

Mouse clicks
Most shortcuts are activated by positioning the mouse pointer over a data item and clicking with the right mouse button. This displays a context-sensitive drop-down list of options. To select an option from the list, click it with the left mouse button.

Wherever a Stock Id is displayed you may right-click for the following options:

Stock details: displays Stock details window for selected Stock Id

Graphs: loads Graph Selection form with Stock Id selected

Trades: lists Trades History for selected Stock Id

News: lists News Articles for selected Stock Id

Profile: displays Company Profile data for selected Stock Id

Manipulating windows - re-sizing and re-positioning

The standard forms and toolbar provided by the Proquote system may be moved around the screen by dragging the title bar of the form, and in some cases may be re-sized (but not generally). Most forms may be minimised, depending on the symbols provided in the top right hand corner of the applicable window:

Example of a close button  Close the currently selected form - if this is the Proquote toolbar or the browser window, your Proquote session will be closed (but you will still need to close your telephone connection if you are on a dial-up link).
Example of a restore button  Restore/maximise - shows the current window at its normal size or maximises window if option available. Ticker lists will be maximised vertically or horizontally to fill the space available.
Example of a minimise button  Minimise - hides the selected window, placing it on the windows taskbar in minimised format.

If a form is able to be maximised, the title bar (top of the form) can be double-clicked to perform this function.

Spreadsheets
The Proquote system makes extensive use of spreadsheet-like layouts ("stocklists") to display data and edit data views. There are a few common actions which may be carried out on these layouts. You may:

Click a column heading to sort the data in the column

Resize a column by dragging the column divider with the mouse

Click a column heading and drag the column to the right or left in order to move/re-sort the column order

Note: Unlike other Proquote windows, the Stocklist window does not provide re-sizeable fonts to change the font size used in this type of window. Please use the System Preferences facility.

Stock Selection form
There are several places within Proquote where you may wish to specify a stock (e.g. to add to a stock list, or to obtain an instant Level 1 quote). If you enter an ambiguous Stock Id or Stock Name, the Stock Selection form is displayed:

Example of Stock Selection screen

The list of stocks is in alphabetical order sorted by either Stock Id or name, according to which field you entered on the search form.

To select a stock simply click its entry in the list, then click "OK" or double click on the entry.

To abort Stock Selection click the "Cancel" button or close the Stock Selection form. Once an item has been selected you will return to the next step in the process you were engaged in, e.g. if activated from the Stock Finder, the Level 1 display for the selected stock will be displayed.
